The Milli Majlis sharply condemned the biased documents of the parliaments of Belgium and the Netherlands against Azerbaijan

On April 16, 2026, the Houses of Representatives of Belgium and the Netherlands adopted resolutions aimed at undermining the Azerbaijani-Armenian peace process and the steps toward creating an atmosphere of peace and cooperation in the region through the joint efforts of both countries. The Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan sharply condemns and categorically rejects these one-sided and biased documents, which refer to the sovereign territories of our country in a distorted manner and are built on false claims and unfounded accusations.

This was stated in a statement by the Milli Majlis on the matter.

The statement also notes: "These documents, which distort the history and consequences of the conflict that existed between Azerbaijan and Armenia, stemming from the unhealthy and racist imagination of traditional anti-Azerbaijani, Islamophobic circles, constitute a gross violation of international law and the rule of law, and a provocation against the ongoing peace process in the region, which is going through a sensitive stage.

The fact that these documents were adopted precisely at the time when the next meeting of the speakers of the parliaments of Azerbaijan and Armenia was taking place clearly demonstrates that the "initiators" of these documents are far removed from the realities of the region, and their true intention is not the promotion of peace and dialogue, but rather the incitement of hostility and revanchism.

The absence in the document adopted by the House of Representatives of Belgium of any reference to the historic Washington peace summit, the failure to mention the results of the summit, including the initialing of the Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, is yet another vivid example of the "literacy" of the authors of the document and those who voted for it on this topic, as well as their chronic bias.

The assessment by the authors of the document, who consider the situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border to be risky from a military standpoint and present this as grounds for the continuation of the European Union monitoring mission in Armenia, primarily contradicts the publicly stated position of Armenian officials. It is precisely as a result of the peace-oriented steps and responsible behavior of the Azerbaijani side that the last two years have been characterized as the calmest period without any military incidents on the border, and this has been confirmed by the Armenian side.

Presenting individuals whose commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity was proven during a transparent and open legal process as "prisoners of war" and demanding their release is, above all, an encroachment on the norms of international law, human rights, and the rule of law referenced in the aforementioned documents.

The legality of the judicial proceedings against the said convicted individuals and the ensuring of all their rights during the investigation and trial were confirmed by the relevant neutral international mechanisms. In this context, it should be particularly noted that the appeals filed by Armenia regarding the release of these individuals, as well as the adoption of measures against Azerbaijan in connection with the process of their conviction, were repeatedly rejected by the International Court of Justice of the United Nations.

Likewise, in the relevant opinion of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the UN Human Rights Council dated March 13, 2025, the legality of the arrest and conviction of the said individuals by the Azerbaijani side was confirmed, and the claims regarding the violation of the rights of these individuals were not upheld.

We expect that the relevant states to which these unfounded appeals are addressed, as well as the European Union, will refrain from destructive interference in the peace process, which is being resolutely advanced through bilateral dialogue, and we call on them to take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such provocative steps."

The Milli Majlis demanded that the parliaments of Belgium and the Netherlands put an end to the hate campaign against Azerbaijan and the steps that undermine efforts to strengthen peace in the region. It was stated that these actions at the current sensitive stage serve not only to encourage anti-peace revanchist forces but also damage the declared security and economic interests of the European Union in the region.
