The Imam of the Agdam Mosque revealed an amazing detail connecting the year 1868 with Azerbaijan's Victory
Imam of the Aghdam Juma Mosque Mehman Nasirov told Baku TV about a striking historical detail related to this ancient temple. An inscription carved on the walls of the mosque back in 1868, after more than a century and a half, has become a symbol of one of the most stirring moments following the liberation of Karabakh from occupation.
According to the imam, when the mosque was built in 1868, a verse was carved on its walls that was completely unused in such structures at the time. It is the first verse of Surah "Al-Fath" ("Victory"): "Inna fatahna laka fathan mubeena" – "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory."
As Mehman Nasirov emphasized, this verse is unique for the architecture of such sacred structures: "At that time, this verse was not used in any mosque, at any entrance. Moreover, this verse is generally not customary to inscribe in mosques – traditionally, it is placed on battle banners."
More than 150 years after the mosque was erected, Aghdam fell under occupation that lasted nearly three decades. However, after the occupation was brought to an end as a result of the 44-day Patriotic War of 2020, something occurred that many consider a deeply symbolic event.
"When President Ilham Aliyev, wearing the military uniform of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, entered the mosque after the liberation, it was this very verse that greeted Mr. President: 'Allah has indeed granted you a clear victory,'" the imam recounted.
This episode became one of the most emotional moments associated with the return of Azerbaijani lands. The inscription, carved by an unknown craftsman a century and a half ago, seemed to have been waiting for its moment to acquire its true meaning on the day of the triumph of historical justice.
